In this two-hour workshop, we will be exploring the possibilities of printing vegetables using relief and monotype printmaking techniques. Students will learn to carve a variety of veggies (mostly root vegetables) into text or images for printing. In addition to all of the fun that comes with cutting and printing your veggies, we will also focus our discussion on positive and negative stamps, creating patterns, and the longevity of vegetable printing.

​​​Unlock the fascinating world of the decorative paper technique known as paste paper from the comfort of your own home in this hands-on course where you’ll learn various exercises, concepts, and skills to create stunning paste paper designs. We will dive into the art of pattern creation, color blending, and texture manipulation as you experiment with different tools and techniques. Our discussions will also focus on the versatility of paste paper and its applications in bookbinding, mixed media art, and more. Develop your artistic eye and leave the workshop with a collection of unique paste paper creations, ready to elevate your creative projects.

We will start the course with a brief introduction to paste paper and its historical significance, then discuss a few key aspects of color theory and color blending techniques. Participants will explore pattern design and composition as they master different paste application techniques and experiment with texture manipulation using various tools. Additionally, through the incorporation of elements such as stencils and stamps, participants will be able to enhance their designs even further!

Relief Printing Anywhere:

Relief Printing Anywhere is a two-session virtual workshop. The first class focuses on discussing and experimenting with materials to create the relief blocks from, image transferring techniques, tools for carving, proper carving techniques, and sharpening your carving tools. The second class focuses on proper printing techniques, registering multiple blocks, and reduction woodcuts.
​
Students learn the basics of relief printing at home. We discuss ways to create relief blocks from materials around your house as well as more professional materials like wood and linoleum. We also cover a few tricks for printing including registering multiple colors and spoon-printing.

Making Meaning:

Virtual Workshop with The Center for Book Arts

​This discussion-based course series offers a deep dive into the theoretical underpinnings of printmaking and book art, encouraging participants to critically analyze and contextualize their own creative practices. Each session will focus on a different area of the larger theme of the course: an introduction to making meaning, the role of the artist, materiality and meaning, making multiples, and an argument for print.
​
Through thought-provoking readings and group discussions, participants will develop a nuanced understanding of key concepts, such as materiality’s influence over meaning, power dynamics between maker and audience, and the impact of technological advancements, while honing their critical thinking and analytical skills. This workshop is designed for printmakers and book artists of all levels seeking to expand their artistic perspectives and engage in meaningful dialogue.

Bookbinding for Artists: Drum Leaf:

​Drum Leaf is a simple glued book structure that is ideal for anyone looking to make a beautiful handmade book using individual pages, prints, drawings, or photographs. The structure lays flat, eliminates the need to print on the front and back of sheets, and can be created using almost any kind of paper! In this workshop, students will learn the basics of the Drum Leaf structure including how to make a simple drop-spine soft cover and how to problem solve. No previous experience needed!
